In the last meeting of the year, SBLW Democratic Club members overwhelmingly supported a proposal to augment their efforts by sponsoring what is initially being called an “Action Group.” Designed to allow time for reflecting on the recent election and promoting a progressive agenda, the group will meet frequently in the coming weeks beginning on Tuesday, November 29 at 11:30. All interested Leisure World Democrats are welcome. Reservations are required: please call Laura Wilson at 760-6660.
Club members also warmly welcomed Shakeel Syed, the new executive director of Orange County Communities Organized for Responsible Development (OCCORD), as the guest speaker at their Nov. meeting. In response to the Club’s request, Shakeel addressed a variety of concerns being articulated by Southern California Muslims as well as those coming from within the Orange County immigrant community that his organization serves. Members appreciated his ability to address issues on a personal level as well as in a global way. A question & answer session followed during which he helped explain Sharia law. The Club’s Board of Directors will be discussing ways to support the work of OCCORD.
Shelly Haggerty, Club member as well as a vice-chair of the Democratic Party of Orange County (DPOC), reported that Orange County is turning blue; that the Nov. election was the first time since the Great Depression that a Democratic presidential candidate had won Orange County! She also noted that Representative Alan Lowenthal was reelected to the US House of Representatives with majorities not only in LA, but also in Orange County. However, there remain important local races within the county in which Democratic voters are not turning out to vote in large numbers so activists have plenty of work ahead. She welcomed Club members to become more involved by running for a spot on the Democratic Party of Orange County Central Committee, the governing body of the County Democratic Party. Anyone interested should contact the Democratic Party of Orange County and tell them Shelly sent them!
The next meeting of the SBLW Democratic Club will be on Tuesday, January 17 in Clubhouse 3, Room 2 at 1:00 p.m. All those interested in joining the Club should contact President Mary Larson at 296-8521 for more information.
